THE district council is committed to people and businesses who really cannot afford to pay their local taxes.

But those who voluntarily refuse to spit are warned that they will face legal action.

Somerset West and Taunton Council have established a dedicated project team to help clients get rid of city tax and corporate debt.

The program will aim to improve general housekeeping, create business information about indebted customers and internal case resolution procedures.

He will also attempt to identify and engage with clients with significant debts or multiple unpaid debts and those with vulnerabilities.

Any additional income collected will be used to pay for essential services.

Cllr Ross Henley, Executive Member of Internal Operations, said: “Our goal is to engage with customers to help them get out of debt.

“We recognize that with the current Covid-19 crisis and the rising cost of living, some customers are struggling to pay.

“The key message is that if customers contact us, we promise to help genuine cases that can’t pay.

“The small minority who willfully refuse to pay, we will pursue with coercive measures. ”
